Each renewable energy industry — solar, wind, bioenergy,
hydropower and geothermal — faces its own set of unique
challenges each year. For our annual outlook issue, we asked industry
trade group executives to answer one pressing question for 2014:
What is the biggest challenge facing your industry?
WITHOUT QUESTION, renewed attacks on Net
Energy Metering (NEM) policies represent one
of the biggest challenges facing America’s solar
energy industry in 2014.
Last year, Arizona Public Service (APS)
spent a whopping $4 million trying to undo
NEM and effectively kill rooftop solar in Arizona. Eventually, we won that battle, but it was
costly, time consuming and left both sides with
bitter feelings. As an organization, our goal is
to prevent another “Shootout at the O.K. Corral” by educating skeptical policymakers about
the value of NEM.
All across the United States, rooftop solar panels are popping up
on homes, businesses and schools like mushrooms in a forest. Why?
Well, among other things, consumer choice in America is something
that we all hold very sacred.
Today, smart policies, such as NEM and the ITC, are helping to fuel
solar’s explosive growth. Our industry now employs 120,000 Ameri-
cans at more than 6, 100 U.S. companies. What’s more, we’re generat-
ing enough electricity to power nearly 2 million homes nationwide.
Part of this amazing success can also be attributed to the fact
that the average cost of a solar system has dropped by nearly 40
percent over the past two years and by more than 50 percent since
